About Typhoon Surf Tours
Typhoon Surf Tours are a New Zealand based company that lead small group surfing tours through the very south of Japan. The tours are held during the typhoon season each year (Aug – Nov).
A small operation, Typhoon Surf Tours was created to make it possible for passionate surfer-travelers to experience first hand the many inspirational places throughout Japan’s southern countryside. I want to provide a unique experience every time with a high level of service. Keeping things small is key - a group of like-minded people sharing waves and an adventure into the heart of Japan.
The idea of starting Typhoon Surf Tours crystallised after I returned home from 2 years living in Miyazaki. Many people kept asking me about Japan and I had an urge to share some of the amazing experiences I had, both in the ocean and on land. Put simply, there is something magical about surfing in Japan.
Tracking an approaching swell, planning a mission, jumping in the car and scoring good waves amongst natural surroundings is what I have always done. I like playing the host and letting everyone else go into holiday mode.
I believe Japan is the perfect place to do this.
About Our Surf Coaching
Typhoon Surf Tours other objective is to help those who want to become better surfers. I am an experienced surf instructor, currently working at home in New Zealand. In the past I trained and worked in Australia and also spent a season managing a surf school in Panama. I truly enjoy helping people take their surfing to the next level.
My passion lies in helping the intermediate surfer. I am not a pro surfer and I didn’t start super young. This means I can relate to the frustrations of the late starter to surfing. The intermediate surfing course gives me an opportunity to pass on my knowledge, and offer advice on things you can do to improve your surfing. I know from experience what works and what doesn’t – both from my own surfing and from coaching many others. I have also undergone training with top Australian surf coach Martin Dunn on the latest coaching methods for novice and intermediate surfers.
The Intermediate Surfing Course is quite different from other surf schools. It takes a holistic approach to improving your surfing, I don’t just focus on analysing your technique. I believe that helps, but it is most beneficial to take an overall look at a surfers skills first. Where are they at mentally? Are they trying too hard? Are they strong enough? Are they flexible enough? Can they read waves properly?
Once that has been done then a plan can be made for improvement. That plan might invlolve simple cue-words related to a particular move, or it might involve regular yoga, strength exercises, or a shift in your mindset.
Dates and Prices
Although there are limited dates available for the tours and courses, it is flexible. If you are interested but the timing isn’t quite right, please email me.
The tours have been designed to be as comfortable and affordable as possible, with a good standard of accommodation and food. If you are booking as a group I can possibly offer discounts, depending on the exchange rate at the time. Feel free to ask.
