Intermediate Surf

Working at surf schools, I’ve coached many Intermediate level surfers and I believe it’s a vital stage in your surfing development. Getting Intermediate Surf is very important. This is because you can speed up your learning by regularly surfing conditions that match your skill level. If you build your basic skills in suitable waves, you can quickly move on to different types of surf in the future.

At Typhoon Surf Tours, our Intermediate Surfing Course makes use of some of the best intermediate surf spots you could hope to find anywhere. A lot of people will tell you to just surf sandy beach breaks when you’re at an intermediate level. That is often good advice, but some beach breaks can be really bad for your surfing. For example, nasty shore breaks can form, leaving you with nose dive after nose dive, you might know the feeling. The other problem is you often spend nearly your whole surf paddling and duck-diving the relentless whitewater. Paying your dues is one thing, but you don’t want to waste time unecessarily, especially if you started surfing a bit later in life than you would have liked.

When you’re at this stage you need as much time up and riding as possible, that way you can feel out those rails, and learn how to turn powerfully. Intermediate level waves allow you to do this and the skills are solidified.

It’s also important to go out in different types of surf so that you grow your ocean and wave knowledge quickly. I often see Intermediates getting frustrated when they try to surf conditions that are new for them. Maybe you’ve felt this – one day you're surfing well and you think you’ve finally got it! But then the next day you try another spot, the waves are different and you can’t even ride a wave….you can’t understand what happened.

Don’t worry, you haven’t gone backwards, you just need to broaden your exposure to a wide range of intermediate surf spots. Once you’ve done that, you will be able to apply your skills to nearly all conditions.

The Intermediate Surfing Course uses a variety of spots that maximise your riding time. This is because they have nice channels to the side of the breaks. You can paddle out easily, saving energy for working on your skills.

If you haven’t surfed many different spots before, this is a good way to confidently surf pointbreaks and reefbreaks, with the support of an instructor. We can also surf a wide range of beach breaks too, everything is available in a small area.
