Different Surf Trips

It seems many surfers these days are looking for somewhere different, somewhere new. For decades Australian surfers have been going to Indonesia every year; Americans have been going to Mexico and Central America. While those trends will no doubt continue, another one is emerging. Surfers tired of the crowds are looking for different surf travel experiences.
The Problem
Surfing is too much fun. The word is out and everyone wants to do it. The numbers of surfers will keep increasing. The surf media have shown us all the epic spots out there and now we can easily put ourselves in those lineups. The Mentawais, Puerto Escondido, wherever…..
MORE SURF MEDIA PHOTOS & VIDEOS + A GROWING SURFER POPULATION +
MORE SURF CAMPS & CHARTERS + INTERNET INFO SHARING VIA FORUMS
= MORE CROWDED SURF SPOTS
I’m not saying this is a bad thing; it’s just the way it is.
The Solution - “Different” Surf Destinations
Don’t worry. The days of adventure and uncrowded surf are not over yet.
You just need to think outside the square. These days you can find uncrowded waves by going somewhere that:
- has remained under the media radar
- no one else wants to go to because of the cold or danger
- is completely isolated
- has cultural or other barriers
- is out of season
Just to get you thinking, here are a few of the more unique surf travel experiences:
- Norway – looks good but can you handle the cold?
- Japan – typhoon fun if you can decipher the language and keep your costs down
- Pakistan – gold coast like rights but maybe too intrepid for most of us!
- Chile’s long highways – Desolate, cold lunar landscapes hiding epic waves
The benefits of going on a different surf trip
- the excitement that bubbles in your veins as you set off on the adventure
- if you manage to find them, perfect waves with just you and your mates
- you’ll feel like you achieved something different
- The actual travel experience will be a deeper one. Rather than seeing a culture that is bent over backwards to cater to tourism, you’ll likely see one that is ancient, rich, strong and unchanged
- You will completely leave your own culture behind for a little while and return home refreshed
